Summary

This study described HIV transmission, mortality and loss to follow-up (LTFU) of HIV-exposed infants attending a postnatal clinic in an urban hospital in Durban, South Africa. The authors noted that the urban PMTCT program achieved low transmission rates at six weeks, but many infants were lost to follow-up before six months of age, which limited their ability to examine HIV transmission and determinants of mortality until age 18 months.
