Summary

The British guidelines on clinical practice in the treatment and management of HIV-infected pregnant have shifted a bit with respect to use of efavirenz and nevirapine for women of child-bearing age. Despite animal studies that hint of teratogenic effects of efavirenz, the guidelines state that "emerging prospective data in which no evidence of human teratogenicity has been seen the panel consider that there are insufficient data to support the former position and furthermore recommend that efavirenz can be both continued and commenced in pregnancy." The guidelines cover ART therapy both to prevent HIV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) and for the welfare of the mother herself.
