Summary

This is the second addition of a guide completed in 2003. Skilled attendants working at the primary level of health care may use this guide to manage the care of women during and after pregnancy. It provides evidence-based information on managing pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum and post-abortion periods, and newborns during their first week of life. The PCPNC is a guide for clinical decision-making, allowing early detection of complications and the initiation of early and appropriate treatment including, if necessary, timely referral.A section in the beginning describes how the guide is organized, the overall content and presentation. Additional training tools and an adaptation guide will facilitate use in diverse settings to serve the ultimate goal of make pregnancy safer worldwide.
