Summary

This course is intended for health workers in district outpatient clinics or peripheral health centers and clinics, in rural or urban areas, and in low-resource settings. The course is based on the Chronic HIV Care with ARV Therapy guidelines and covers patient education, psychosocial support, prevention for positives, clinical staging, prophylaxis (INH, cotrimoxazole, fluconazole), preparation for ARV therapy, initiation of a fixed-dose first-line ARV regimen in patients without complications, clinical monitoring, response to side effects, adherence preparation and support, management of chronic problems, and data collection based on a simple treatment card. The course material includes a participant manual, a Course Director/Facilitator Guide, Annexes to the Participant Manual, copies of cards and other material used for various exercises, sample clinical review forms, wall charts, a photobooklet and a pre- and post-training test.
